Question Need help chosing an SLR

Hi Guys,

I have been following this site since long time and surely this is ONE of the motivating factors which is pushing me to be a proud owner of an SLR.

I am planning to buy an DSLR but going crazy while selecting. As this will be am big investment for me and I am a newbie in this business but keen to develop this hooby...i need your help in choosing the camera...

I have shortlisted some of them :

Nikon 5000
Canon 500D
Canon 550D

If you have any SLR that you would like to suggest that will be great !!

Is there anu BIG difference between Canon 500D and 550D apart from 15MP and 18MP respectively...

To begin with I might go with the default lenses 18-55.

Please advise....

Thanks.
Prashant. S.

First, why are you getting a DSLR? Many people, "want," one but, once they get it, they realize they have no idea why or how to use it. With some of the newer non-DSLRs out, you'd be surprised at what you can get out of them.

Second, and you may have answered this in my first question, what is it you plan to do with your new camera?

Tough to steer you in the direction of a camera without knowing what you plan to use it for.

Hello Prashant:

I am a big fan of the prosumer Nikon D300 series for serious amateurs and even profis without a great deal of cash. You can see the reviews and comparisons here, the best digicam review site on the web: Nikon D300 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

If you don’t plan to learn to properly use a DSLR, then a point and shoot is the answer.

the D300 is probably more than what you are looking for right now...

my suggestion would be to go to the store and try them. all three of them. play around with them and explore the menus and the layout of the buttons and such, and see which you like best. any of them will do the job brilliantly, especially if it's your first foray into the DSLR world, so really it comes down to personal preference. some people like canons better, some people like nikons, and some people like pentax/sony/olympus.

Thanks for the prompt response. But i could answer to this question which i asked it to myself before making my mind to select an SLR...

Right now im really keen and passionate about learning this art. and surely I will surely think about it as a profession in future ...

Among the different styles....i love the macro style and want to explore that thru an SLR.

Yesterday I got an Canon500D and it seems to be great.

Thanks.
Prashant
