As far as I can tell it also doesn't have the additional digital display at the top of the camera like the 50D - does anyone know if that's right?

That's wrong. The 60D has the dual-wheel and top LCD display of the XXDs; the quick access buttons have been simplified, though, and the buttons on the back have been seriously rearranged because of the flip-out screen.

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos60d/page3.asp

Go read the dpreview hands on, it's got all the details and tons of pictures.

Canon EOS 60D Hands-on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

The only information that's vague is exactly what the flash master in the pop-up can do (they say no multi-flash capability, the Canon press release says it can control multiple flashes, Rob Galbraith say it can master two groups of flashes. I'm waiting until Canon puts the manual up on line to find out what everybody's trying to say.

I got an impression that the 60d is gonna be cheaper than the 50d.. is this true..?
Actually I've been dreaming for the 50D...and peobably be getting one soon, but if 60d is cheaper and since it is the latest canon out.. I would guess that it is supposed to be better interms of performance and functionaliity..?? .. I just ignore the magnesium body..(no significance to me..)..

then again should i go get the 550D....huh..??

The 60D isn't really a replacement for the 50D (performance-wise) from what I can read in the specs. Some things may be better but others (like fps) are worse. You have to decide whether the things they've added/subtracted for the 60D are things you need/don't need.

which all adds to the dilemma and confusions...LOL.. it's like back to square one when i first started buying a DSLR.. the transition to 50D would have been a smooth one had the 60D wasnt coming.... Now i just have to wait and see.. Even the 7D might be a considerable option.. In fact, 5dmkII, seems to be within range, with all the price slashing.

Depends on how you look at it.

The 50D when it debuted had an initial MSRP of $1299 (body only). After two years, it's now down to around $1100. The 60D, when it comes out, will MSRP at $1099, and after initial demand is met, the street price will start falling (~six months or so, depending on the demand. The 7D was so popular and hard to stock, this didn't happen for quite a bit longer). This happens with all dSLRs (and lenses, too).

So, looked at one way, it's cheaper than the 50D. But initially, no, it'll cost about the same.

Remember, too, the next bodies (after the XS and 1DsMkIII) that are probably up for a refresh will be the 5DMkII or 7D.

I like this table for keeping track of what's going on.

if you need performance than go for 7D. If you want a little bit more than a "beginner" camera (i.e. 550D) but doesn't want to spend that much on a 7D, then go far 60D.

Said on that 50D is now a very good deal if you manage to find one to buy.

Just purchased a 50d w/28-135 IS lens from Best Buy for $1076...Love the camera, was considering waiting for the 60d, but like the mag body of 50d and the feel. I upgraded from Sony A300.
