Default Looking To Purchase a New Camera

Hi -

I am very new to this forum, and this is my first post! I am currently looking to purchase a new DSLR with a lens kit and perhaps an extra lens. For the past several years I have been using a Nikon N75, an SLR camera that I am very happy with. However, I will be going to school for photography next fall, and I need to invest in the "newer" technology. And, while I have been using a point and shoot digital camera for years, I really have no idea where to begin when it comes to choosing a DSLR. I have a budget of around $1,500. I was considering the Rebel T2i EF-S 18-55mm IS Kit which I found for around $899. It had pretty good reviews, but I was looking to get some feedback on the camera, and well as suggestions for a camera that might better suit my needs. I will be taking photos of a variety of subjects, but what I specifically like to focus on are musicians performing, landscape settings, and architectural designs. I also enjoy taking photos at sporting events. I would love some help on choosing a camera and perhaps an extra lens. Thanks in advance.

What lenses do you have for the N75? (i.e., is there legacy glass that you have in the Nikon F mount that you want to take to digital with you?)

The only lens that I currently use is a Nikkor 28-80mm. I would love if I would be able to use it with my new camera, but I'm not very familar with how the lenses translate differently between SLR and DSLR bodies.

With Nikon, no translation is needed. The same lenses that mount on your film SLR will work on Nikon dSLRs.

The only possible snags are that on the Nikon dSLR side, the entry level bodies (D3000 and D5000) don't have focus motors, so only AF-S lenses can autofocus on them, and the entry-level bodies also use 1.5x crop sensors, so you get a narrower field of view with lenses than you're used to on film (i.e., 28mm won't be particularly wide on a dSLR, either Nikon or Canon. Canon's crop size is actually a little smaller: 1.6x). The focus motor issue may or may not be a dealbreaker, depending on the lenses you want to use. Most of Nikon's current zooms are AF-S, but most of their primes aren't.

If your 28-80 is the AF-D version, then it's probably not worth making the Nikon/Canon decision solely to keep the use of that lens, particularly if you can't get midtier body (D80/90) which has a focus motor and can autofocus AF lenses. Canon might work out a little better for the sports shooting, simply because all the current Canon lenses will autofocus on all of Canon's dSLR bodies.

Heck, you can find a refurbished T1i with 18-55 IS kit lens for $650 on the Canon website. A refurbed XS with 18-55 IS kit goes for $399.

PS: Just to make sure you noticed, this is the T1i & not the T2i that you mentioned in the your first post.

I was in position to take the t2i without the other lense +bag... or take the T1i with those!! I chose the T1i
