Default 24-105 or 18-200IS

Which lense would you pick to stay on your Camera most of the Time, the 24-105 or the 18-200IS, I was told that one or the other is just as good, I just do Not want to keep changing lense, when I am Hiking or just walking around a City.

Your thought please.

Thanks

For crop cameras out of those two lenses I would choose the 18-200 mainly becuse 18mm is reasonably wide.

If you are nor worried about having a wide angle walk around lens I would go for the 24-105, mainly because it is a better lens both mechanically & IQ wise.

My walk around lens is the 24-105, however I am using on a full frame camera.

Full frame: 24-105.
Crop sensor: neither. The 15-85 would be a better choice.

I find this wildly funny, as the two lenses are both good, but vastly different in their capabilities, and there is no one thing they're exactly equivalent at. Especially price.

If this is your top priority, and you're mostly going to be using it outdoors during the day, then get the 18-200 IS.

If image quality is your top priority, than get an L.

If price is your top priority, get the EF-S 18-135 IS.

It depends on what your budget is, and what's most important to you, as to which lens will be the better fit. I use the 24-105L on a crop body all the time, and it works fine for me, because the subject matter I use it for doesn't require wide-angle, and more often requires telephoto. It fits how I shoot, and it fit my budget. These things things may not apply to you.

Default Wich lens..

Hi there,

I use a Canon 50D with most of the time the EF 24-105 L... .It is a very good option.
I also use the Canon EF 17-40 L... . and the EF 70-200 L ... .
These 3 lenses all have a f4.

I would however consider also the combination of the EF 17-40 L with the newer EF 28-300 L... . This combination gives more possibility's with lesser changing of lenses. I do not consider price here, because i dont know your budget, and that is your consideration to make. Why only EF lenses and no EFS ? I personally think that even if you own a cropped camera, you should keep in mind that within a shorter or longer time from now, you will maybe consider to buy a camera with a full-size sensor, and then only EF lenses will keep working... Why L-glass ? It is simply better, but still, you have to consider your budget.

Greetings fromout Belgium

The 17-40 f/4L isn't exactly going to stop someone from switching lenses.

And the EF 28-300L IS USM, aka "the paparazzi lens" is $2400, and out of most peoples' budgets. And the image quality is lower than that of something like a 70-200, because it has a much more ambitious design. The MTF is damn impressive, and it's certainly an improvement on the lens it replaces (35-350L), but it's a very special-purpose lens not many folks are going to want in their bag. For most shooters, the image quality/cost ratio just isn't high enough.

It really depends on the subjects / topics you take most and your personal preference. For usual walkaround, I find tele is not much use but wide angle is way more useful.

I used to use 50D + 17-40 as my walk around lens, and now I am using 5D mnark II + 50 1.4 as walk around lens and I am shoot happily!

I have the 18-200 which I used on a 6 week trip to the US recently. You are welcome to have a look at the photos here Collection: USA 2010. I'm only a beginner so the quality of the shots won't be that good due to my lack of knowledge, but it'll give you an idea of how the lens does in spite of that.
