Default How to get a 12MB shot

I have a Canon Rebel s-xi 12 megapixel camera. I am entering a contests and they want me to submit a 12 MB 300 ppi photo. How do I do that with my camera or can I?

Is the 12mb a minimum or maximum limit?

Most jpegs should be under that limit.

Yes, to get that large of a JPEG you'd need much more. My 50D is 15MP and my JPEGs aren't anywhere near 12MB in size.

I'm guessing that's the maximum size.

My guess is that the organisers don't really know what they're talking about.

300 ppi: Means nothing unless you know how large you want to print a photo. Print a 300 × 300 pixel file on one inch square paper, and guess what, it's 300 ppi. Print it on 2 × 2 inch and it's 150 ppi. Here's a little more info: Introduction to Digital Photography: Lesson 2 Understanding Resolution

12MB: means absolutely nothing. Maybe they mean megapixels instead of megabytes. You XSi makes 4272 × 2848 pixel RAW and (Large) JPEG images. That's 12 megapixels. The RAW files are usually quite a bit larger than 12 MB but they're still 12 megapixel. JPEG (large) files are quite a bit smaller than 12 MB but still 4272 × 2848 pixels.

I'd ask the organisers what they really mean.

Could you possibly send us a link to the contest or rules page in which your trying to enter. I agree that the organizers may not know what they are talking about. Generally 300dpi is the "print standard" of most publications for a digital image. The 12mb minimum picture size is really strange, normally there is a limit but most digital cameras today are very capable of producing a printable image. My jpegs are never that big unless I do heavypost production, don't flatten my layers, and save it on the maximum image quality. Like said maybe sending us the link will give us some direction. Good luck!

Sounds like the contest organizers don't understand anything about photography and are just throwing around words. Don't enter.

Not only would I be confused about the rules I'd also be taking a closer look at the rules for a possible rights grab since none of it seems legitimate.
