Default so that was weird.... maybe something is wrong...

today I tried to set a custom white balance with my canon 50d outside in the shade. For the first attempt I used a white tshirt. I photographed the shirt so that it filled the entire frame. When I assigned that image to the custom white balance portion and shot another picture to make sure it was correct, the entire image was lime green..... I thought I might have done something wrong or the tshirt wasn't exactly right. Later on I found a white piece of paper to do a custom white balance and had the same results. What could I have possibly done wrong? After looking at the images taken that day I noticed the quality doesn't seem to be where it should be. All of the images were taken under iso 400, most of which were between iso100-200. I kept the shutterspeed around 1/200 and never went lower than 1/160. I also used a 50mm f1.4. I was mostly shooting around f/2.0-f/3.5. I was also shooting in RAW. The images seem pretty grainy for the settings used. Could something be wrong with my camera? Anyone have any ideas?

From what I've read, a 50D likes a gray card for WB rather than a white card. I use gray and (usually) have no problems. However, every so often, it doesn't get it quite right.

Its just strange because I've set the white balance using a white piece of paper so many times and I've never had this problem. So here's a few examples from the shoot.

_MG_8376 this is the result from the custom white balance.

_MG_8627
1/200
f/2.0
iso 125

Capture

The only thing I can think of is that I was open too much and it made the image a bit too soft for my liking... idk, maybe I'm just looking for something to be wrong... just need second opinions...

Interesting dilemma. :/ I was just reading the post, and I have no idea how to help you. I am interested in purchasing the 50d, though. Have you had any other issues with it?

no this is the first I've had anything weird happen like this. I've had it since March of 2009 and I've used the heck out of it.

derrrr... so I did a little experiment today and figured out that I over exposed the white just enough that it threw the camera off but didn't give me the warning about over exposing the white... so that's fixed... just wondering about the quality now....

The white shirt probably wasn't actually white, it was more likely a shade of gray.

Our brains make adjustments all the time so what you expect to be white gets changed so it looks white.

You're much better off using a good gray card like the WhiBal from Digital Photography - RawWorkflow.com - Michael Tapes: photo news and commentary or better yet, X-Rite's ColorChecker Passport X-Rite: Get exactly the color you need, every time, anywhere in the world. .
