Default EOS-1D Mark II - 18-200mm lens question

Hello,

Thanks for taking a look at my post. My friend has let me borrow his EOS-1D Mark II for the holiday weekend to see how I like it.

I tried popping on my Quantaray 18-200mm lens and when I have it set at 18 I get a black ring on all my photos. I'm assuming that this has something to do with the minimum mm that can be used with this camera.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Sort of surprised the lens actually mounts. It's designed for a crop sensor, and the 1D line has bigger sensors than the cheaper stuff.

The 18-200 is designed for an APS-C sized (1.5-1.6x) cropped sensor. Lenses are cylindrical tubes. They project circular images. A sensor is rectangular and (hopefully) sits inside that circle.

The 1D, however, uses an APS-H-sized (1.3x) crop sensor. Not quite full frame. But still bigger than an APS-C sensor. As a result, the image circle projected from the 18-200 @18m isn't quite big enough to cover the whole sensor, hence the black edges/corners.

jdepould, most of the 3rd party lenses mechanically use the EOS mount, whether or not the lens's image circle is sized for full frame or APS-C--they don't include the EF-S "bumper" that prevents the Canon crop lenses from being mounted onto the larger-sensored bodies that Canon uses--in other words, it's similar to the FX/DX situation on the Nikon side. So, the lenses will typically mount ok, they just vignette like nobody's business, particularly with wides and ultrawides.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the reply. Could you please suggest an 18-200mm lens that wouldn't have this issue for the mark II and is reasonable in price?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't think anyone makes a full-frame 18-200. You might be able to find a 28-2xx though.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II will work just fine. You can use any of the Canon EF lenses on the 1DMkII. You just can't use any of the EF-S lenses, without doing serious lens mount surgery and endangering your mirror.

You also want to avoid Sigma DC, Tamron Di II, and Tokina DX for the same reason: they're designed for APS-C sensors.
