Default Actuations

I'm looking at picking up a Canon 50D used, but have two questions:

1. how can you actually determine how many actuations have been taken on a camera?
2. what is considered "too many"....before deciding the camera is really too old?

The camera I'm looking at has "only 9,000 actuations" on it....

any responses are appreciated.

thanks!

You're in luck. I happened to post just the thing you need recently on my Tech page. Check it out.

9000 is nothing. I've probably got 3 times that.

Not for Canon, no. But do you really need to access it that often?

Doesn't "EOSinfo" work for you? The author says it works with the 50D and on my 5DII it's "directly off the camera" as soon you switched cycle it's power. Or did you mean, directly IN the camera?

You do need an application to read how many actuations you have. Most are freeware (at least there are plenty out there) for both Mac and Windows.

9,000 is nothing on a 50D. The shutter is rated for 100,000.

Please share the "plenty" names of the freeware that can accurately determine shutter actuation from Canon non-1 series bodies. There are plenty of Windows freeware (don't know about Mac) that can show you the Shutter Speed not Shutter Actuation. Even commercial software such as BreezeBrowser is capable of extracting Shutter Count from a RAW file of an EOS 1 series. Doesn't work on the semi pro and entry level models.

yes, I meant being able to access the info IN the camera; I haven't tried the EOSinfo yet but I will give it a try.

The reason I inquired originally was due to the fact that some of the potential "sellers" of a couple of 50D's identified that information and was curious about whether that information could actually be verified.

Hello,

I suppose 9.000 shots is not a problem, but do take a look at the price you have to pay for the used 50D, as the price for a new body has really dropped. In Europe it costs now around 700 Euro's, and normally you will find it elsewhere then at around 700 dollar...

Greetings,
Bombo
