I am somewhat new to photography....this has been a hobby for a long time but now I am getting to where I am doing portraits and assisting in weddings. I am unsure of what lenses I would like to have on my list of wants because I am unsure of what the different types of lenses do. There are so many different mm lenses so is there a guide out there that explains the differences in each of the mm and lenses types so I could get a better understanding of what I am looking for?

Try this one:
How to Choose the Best Digital SLR Lens It goes through the basic features of lenses, and describes what they mean in practical shooting terms.

Here's an online tool to give a visual comparison of the effect of different focal lengths. Make sure you select the right format (digital or 35mm).
Focal length comparison tool, Tamron USA You should also be aware that longer focal lengths compress distance, making close and far objects appear closer together, while wide angle lenses have the opposite effect. A wide angle lens will make your portrait subjects appear to have long noses. For portraits, focal lengths between about 70mm and 150mm in 35mm format (47-100mm in digital format) work well.IMO 70mm will work for a portrait of a single person, but is a bit short, and it feels invasive to have to stand that close. Good for small groups, though. Last edited by Mike367; 06-23-2010 at 08:17 AM. |
