Default Flash for Auto Racing?

I am in need of a flash to use for action within 25ft. I am on a budget, was hoping for something under $120 but I don't think that is possible

Umm, if you're shooting car racing, a flash wont do jack.

Most race officials frown on photographers using flash until they pull up in the winner's circle.

Why? Flash does nothing but distract drivers. It's flat out BANNED in certain racing organizations.

unless its off camera and well set-up, it will be nothing but a nuisance to the drivers.. and also give crap flat light + reflections back off the car.

I have been involved with racing (fabricator) for over 15rs, from NASCAR, NHRA, USAC, IMCA, CRA, ASA, SCRA and SCCA, Not to mention being a spectator for AMA, CORR andSCORE, I have been at over 40 tracks in my life. Every track I have been too, has photographers using flashes during practice, racing, qualifying . . . So maybe I need to speak to them?

I dont see why they would: At most racetrack distances a flash will do nothing but distract drivers. You should speak to the drivers: see what they think.

Flash is banned at most racetracks I've been to, and is not allowed in F1, WRC and most amateur leagues. The SCCA has reportedly been discussing a ban as well.

... and more importantly, within 25 ft!? Not for me man.

Either way, you're probably looking at a supplemental zoom lens arrangement for the flash. Something like a Better Beamer.

You haven't said what lenses you're using either. Assuming it's a night race? Panning practice might serve you better than a flash.

What is the lens that you shoot with at the track. What I would suggest is to save your money and get either the sigma 70-200 F2.8 or the Rich persons canon 70-200 2.8 non is version with a tripod. A fast lens will do more for you than a flash will if you take pictures at night at the track.
