Default Do you have a G11 and what do you think of it?

Hi everyone,

I have a Canon SLR and also a Canon PowerSHotPro1 (which has a pro lens and is a FANTASTIC all round step up point and shoot with many SLR features) Unfortunately my Powershot has had a major haemorrhage (long story) - I have it at the repairers but don't hold out much hope as the camera is 2005 model and Canon don't make spare parts for it any more..........

So unfortunately, as much as it pains me, I need to look for another camera. I want a good point and shoot that I can take anywhere, is easy to carry and use, has many SLR features and has GREAT image results. I take lots of flower shots and also landscapes.

I am thinking about the Canon G11. Not the G10. I prefer the G11 as it has the rotating screen which I found very useful with the Powershot. And from what I read the resolution is better than the G10.

Do any of you have a G11 and what do you think of it? What are the images like it produces?

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

try the Canon S90. I found it better than the G11.
Load CHDK & you get the advanced features like RAW shooting.

I have a G11 and it is a good camera.
Mine mainly sees use as a second camera when my Canon DSLRs are set up for a specific use or when I want to travel very light.

For flowers and landscapes it is great, especially when used at lower ISO. Only downside is no real shallow DOF pics when shooting flowers.

Main problem is that screen can be virtually unusable in bright sunlight and the optical viewfinder is only fair.

For some of my pics see here (including a sequence full size original jpgs at all ISO's).

+1

I love my s90, but I do miss some of the features the G11 has, namely the flip-out screen, built-in ND filter, optical viewfinder, flash hotshoe, tethered shooting capability, and the accessory tube capability.

The S90 is better in terms of portability, max. aperture, and the control ring on the front. But none of these are specific advantages for landscape and flower macro shooting. Had the OP said more about wanting to street shoot or available light capability, the s90 might have been a better choice, but the G11 is still, overall, a more capable camera.

Yes, I had the same "'swhat?" reaction to the idea of using CHDK to add RAW to the S90 when it has it already. That's what the +1 was for.

I wasn't knowing S90 already has RAW shooting capability. Sorry folks.

No worries. It's relatively rare for a Canon P&S to offer RAW, and the G11 and S90 are the only ones that do, iirc. So, it's always good to mention the CHDK.
