Default Focus issue with 30D

I'm having focus issues with my 30D on both my 18-55 lens, and my 50mm. When I lock the center focus on an object, about 75% of the time, it's the background that ends up being in focus in the photos.

Here's an example I took for test purposes: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/...c0f595c2_b.jpg

The focus was locked on my son's ear, but the wall is in focus instead.

Any advice?

Is you camera's focus method set to One Shot?..you might want to check that

...hmm, I thought it could have been an AI Servo issue. Try doing your composition by dialing in a particular focus point instead of using the center point and re-composing...see if you see a difference

Can't promise it'll make things better though. Some lenses are known to back, or front focus, but it seems a little odd that you are having the exact same problem on both your lenses. Did this just start happening, and did you buy this camera new?

I bought this camera in February, used. I have been having these issues all along, and thought it was just me (I'm still somewhat of a newbie), but even as I learn more it's still happening. It happens in manual mode, as well as the creative modes. I took it and the lenses into a repair shop, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

One last thought..in one of the creative modes try to manual focus on your subject and see what happens. Then shoot the exact same scene with the same focus point in auto focus..pick a stationery target to do this..not a kid. A good way, if you have a tripod, is to shoot a yard stick laying flat and long in front of the camera...pick a point on the yard stick and manual focus on it. Now, without changing your setup do it in auto focus and see where the camera has chosen to focus..if in front of where you think it should have been, then the lens is front focusing. (vise versa if in back) This should not only determine whether your lens has focus issues (front, or back focus) but also if your camera has an auto focus problem.
