Shots taken handheld in low light that exhibit motion blur do not a test make.

It doesn't look like the 7D is necessarily better, it just looks like the 550D steps on it harder, killing the detail.

I have to say, I wasn't blown away by the 7D even at ISO400. I was processing a bunch of files from myself and other people with D700/7D/5D2/1D4, and you could pick out the 7D images pretty easily.

An offtopic question - What do you guys suggest between 500D & 550D.
I'm confused between these two. Barring the video & higher MP, How is the quality of 500D when compared to 550D?

Well, that's kind of a silly question: Barring the video and higher MP, they're essentially the same camera. The video is a big difference: 1080p/30fps (with multiple other options) or 1080i/20fps. If you plan on doing video even remotely seriously, the 550 would be better.

Agreed. Scientific evaluation involves measuring only one variable.
ISO setting is one.
Hand held shots involve movement during exposure (and IS does not equally work on all shots) - the second variable.

Should have used a tripod - a good heavy one for testing.

And, gee, the fact that those are all cameras with larger sensors wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it? C'mon, the 7D is still a 1.6x crop body, for all the hoo-hah. Of course it's not going to give you the high iso noise performance of full-frame and 1.3x crop cameras.

Errr... except for the high iso noise banding issue. Saying that the 500D and 550D are the same is kind of like saying that the 50D and 7D have the same sensor. They don't. The 500D is the next evolution/tweak of the 50D's sensor, the 550D is sharing sensor tech with the 7D.

But yeah, it's not going to be a huge step up in quality, especially if you're not considering the video features, which are the main highlight of the refresh.
