Default need help deciding on a camera

I have decided that I want to go ahead and take the plunge and get a DSLR. (using a canon poing and shoot) I have been tirelessly researching the internet to try to decide what would be the best fit, but I would like a 3rd party's point of view. Here is what I know for sure: I am a beginner, but really want to learn- would like to start with the training wheel setting and eventually wean myself off. I live in Colorado and would like to have a tough, weather resistant camera, but is not a deal breaker if it's not (thinking of a Pentax, maybe). I like shooting macro shots of flowers and miscellaneous things, but also shoot landscapes sometimes. I want a versatile camera that I can grow into as my interests get a little more finely tuned. I do not want to buy a camera with a kit lens, I am willing to pay more to get a good, standard zoom lens. Budget is around $800ish for the body, but not set in stone. I'm kinda focused on Canon, Pentax or Nikon, but I am open to other brands, too. I figured I would post this in the Canon section just because there are so many users. I'm not sure if the rugged design of the Pentax is a good enough trade off for maybe a Rebel. If anyone could give me some insight, that would be fabulous!

Any DSLRs will meet your immediate needs. All of the major brands are good cameras - Pentax possibly because of its weather sealing maybe a bit more so than some of the other brands, especially at the lower price point.

As for long term (years) future needs possibly a Nikon or Canon, mainly because of the vast range of lenses and accessories that are available, for a price.

However one of the main things is how does the camera feel and how does looking through the viewfinder appeal to you.
If it doesn't feel good to use then you won't use it.
Go into a camera store and try some of them out.

I shoot with Canon gear however I have friends who shoot with Pentax and Nikon and are very happy.
