Might be a silly question, but have you cleaned the lens? On my old point and shoot same thing happened to me and it turns out it was a speck of dust on the lens.

Yup: there's crap on the lens. As you "darken" the exposure, you're effectively stopping the lens down, leading a imaging system with a ton of DoF to have even more. What you're seeing is dust on the lens (or possibly even in the camera itself) in slight focus.

Thanks everyone for your help. Can you please tell me how to clean the lens. I may sound a bit silly but I have never done it.

Thanks
Rohan

Spray some eyeglass cleaning solution onto a Q-tip, swab lens.

If cleaning the lens doesn't help, you may need to clean your sensor. Check your owner's manual and do some research before doing that.

He said it was a point and shoot Larry, so cleaning the sensor is probably not an option

Ah, I missed that, too.

I'm guessing it's a dirty lens then. Never seen a dirty sensor on a point and shoot before.

I have. Its hard to do, but its possible. Almost all compacts use a pumper zoom style lens, so there is a very distinct possibility of dust getting into the camera.

Dust does get insides the lens in P&S. I have Canon SX100 IS which has some dust inside the lens. I'm happy that its not causing any negative effect on picture quality.
