dslr rec please

I'm trying to decide between 450D, 500D, 550D to enter into the dslr world.
Regardless of which is the latest model, which out of the three would be the best in exploring photography in general and taking photos when travelling?
I don't really care for video that much so in terms of vid 500 or 550 wouldn't really matter. 450 also sounds like a good choice. And I'm really not sure what camera I would get the most for what I pay. I've heard good reviews for all three models, so I'm now asking 'which one?'
I did hear one thing - I don't really know if it's a valid claim - 550d is an entry-level camera that has taken many prosumer features, and if thinking about 550d and expanding photography knowledge, it is better to spend some more to purchase 50D. I am really not sure. I've read so many reviews that I now don't know what to think.
