My 40D broke Christmas morning, just after taking pics of the kids opening presents. Under warranty it was returned and found to be unrepairable and unreplaceable. Adorama gave me store credit and now almost 5 months later, I have yet to buy a new model.
The 7D is a bit out of my desired price range. The 50D is crap and no video. The T2i has the nice video, sensor, etc., but lacks the mag body, selector wheel, and the 6+ fps shooting. So.....I watch the rumor mill daily hoping a 60D will be forthcoming ANY DAY. Alas, it hasn't happened yet. 10 year DSLR anniversary?? Nothing!! Come on Canon!!! Give me the T2i with a 40D/50D body and buttons, 6-7fps, 3:2 screen, mag body and I'd be set. I'll buy the minute it's available. I attended a high school prom picture taking event prior to the prom...you know...where all the paparrazzi parents and their shooters line up to take pics of the kids. 9 out of 10 were shooting Nikons!!!! No kidding! I would have love to have been there with a model above the avg parent, Gary Fong diffuser, L lenses, Eye-Fi uploading(oh, that would mean the 40/50/60 would support SD cards) like that's ever gonna happen in the XXD series. Not! I just want a camera, with my needs addressed. Is it really too much to ask?

Earliest I'd expect a 60D announcement would be September with likely an October release. All the product announcements cluster in spring and fall, around March & September timeframes.
My 50D may be crap, but when my out-of-warranty XT busted, I sent it to Canon Service, and they offered me the Canon Loyalty Program. I got a refurbed 50D for $640 and they disposed of the XT. And I'm quite happy with my "crap" camera, as much as I complain about it not being the ideal fit for me (they didn't make my camera, either, nor are likely to). Either wait for your perfect camera and have nothing to shoot with until the fall, or compromise and have something to shoot with for the next half year. Your choice.

I'd just go straight to the 7D and enjoy. It may be "a bit" out of your "desired" range, but it offers alot.

I'd like to know why the 50D is, "crap," as you say. Never heard anyone say that about it and I've been shooting with one for a while. I can assure you it is not, "crap," in the least bit.

I'm curious about this as well...

From DPReview: "in terms of per-pixel sharpness the 50D cannot quite keep up with the better 10 or 12 megapixel APS-C DSLRs in the market. At higher sensitivities the smaller photosites are clearly producing more noise (as shown from our RAW comparisons) and so Canon is having to apply more noise reduction to keep to acceptable noise levels, this of course means a loss of detail from ISO 1600 upwards."
As far as 'crap', I was merely expressing an opinion based on a comparison with my former 40D and what's available in the 50. I'd rather see the next model come back down to 15 and employ some additional image noise reduction processing. Given Cardiiiii's logic, I might just have to pony up the extra Benjamin's and get me a 7D. I've rented one of those for a trip to Los Cabos in Feb. it's a nice camera and certainly worth having....just have to convince the bride it's worth keeping.

"We're by no means saying the 50Ds image quality is bad but it's simply not significantly better than the ten megapixel 40D. In some areas such as dynamic range and high ISO performance it's actually worse and that simply makes you wonder if the EOS 50D could have been an (even) better camera if its sensor had a slightly more moderate resolution." So, although it may have given up something in the high ISO area and dynamic range to the 40D, they hardly are calling it, "crap." They also go on to wind up the review with: "The Canon EOS 50D still earns itself our highest reward but considering its price point and our slight concerns about its pixel-packed sensor, it only does so by a whisker." Hmm, earns their highest reward and you're calling it crap? Sorry, I still don't know where you're coming from. |

Yup. The 50D's annoying. I knew about those compromises, and it's been annoying to have the smaller dynamic range, and the high iso banding, but y'know what? It's still a great camera. And I have it in my hands to shoot with when I want. I think I'm still happier than the OP right now with a 50D than he is without one.
I got the 50D as a "holding measure" camera until the one I wanted (hopefully the 60D, but possibly also the T2i) came along. The funny part is after having the 50D, I don't think I'll ever go back to a dRebel, much as I hate the weight and bulk of the XXD line, and it's grown on me. It's not nearly as awful as you think it is. And given that I got mine for less than a dRebel body would have cost, I'm exceedingly happy with it. I've adjusted my technique for it, no question, but then I have to do that with every piece of camera equipment I use. You can't take pictures with the camera that's sitting on a store shelf. And nothing's ever perfect. As with much of life, you may have to compromise to be happy. Personally, I think you should hunt up a used 40D or 5DMkI, if the 50D is churning your stomach that much, and the 7D sticker-shock is too much for you. That way, you can wait out the fall announcments to see if Canon's going to have more than a 1DsMkIV and an update to the XS up its sleeve--both of which have been waiting longer for a refresh than the 50D. Their delaying on a 50D refresh is no doubt selling them a ton of 7Ds.
