Hi Folks,
I recently (6 months) got a new Canon 500D with the premium lens (18mm-200mm) and love the photos clicked with that. My lovely wife, on our 7th anniversary, which is on 21st May has agreed to gift me a camera lens of my choice. I don't know which one to go for. My interests are in shooting portraits and nature. Please suggest which lens would suit. Thanks team. Cheers, Aquarian |

EF 50mm f/1.8 II.
At $100, it won't strain the budget, and it'll spank your 18-200 when it comes to low light and blurring the background.

My humble suggestion would be the Canon 28-135 IS. Everyone I know that owns one, including myself, feel the same way....it's the best $450 we've spent when it comes to camera equipment.
Happy Anniversary!

Not sure I see the point of recommending the 28-135 IS USM when the OP said they have the EF-S 18-200 IS and are very happy with it. They've already got that focal length range covered with IS, and both lenses are relatively slow f/3.5-5.6 consumer zooms. In addition, the 28-135 isn't particularly wide on a crop body, and the lens has more or less been replaced by the new EF-S 18-135 IS. Which also costs $450.

You've not mentioned a budget. You could try to squeeze in the following for under $1k. 85mm f1.8 & 70-300 IS USM.

I'll second the 85mm f/1.8 as a good portrait lens. I absolutely love my 70-200mm f/4L even though you wont have the same bokeh as a 2.8 model, its still super sharp and can be used as both a portrait and nature lens (I'm taking it to Hawaii in August). And as an absolute out of left field lens would be the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens. A couple of my friends swear by it for portraits and it has a 1 to 1 view for macro photography so it is also pretty versatile.
