Default Canon's EOS 7D yeah on nay??

Hey guys and gals,
I'm currently using a 50D but I'm brainstorming bumping up to the 7D.

What are the general opinions on this model? It looks good on paper.

Thanks
R.

It's a great body. I own it. Not an earth shaking upgrade from your 50D, except for a laundry list of functions, the images you get in decent light will be not meaningfully different. It was a substantial upgrade for me. Depends on your level of tech envy I guess. If I owned a 50D I probably would not have upgraded. Of course, if you can't wait for whatever comes next, or can't afford a 5DII and the requisite "L" glass right now...then again...it also depends on your collection of glass.

The new features kind of jumped at me i guess, especially the AF points and the video. I like technical things so I enjoy messing with the features and learning them
I have the glass I need. 85mm 1.8 prime
70-200 f2.8 IS USM
17-55 2.8 IS USM
24-105 4.0 IS USM

Well, I shoots a 50D and my buddy shoots with a 7D. I've played with the 7D and there absolutely is a HUGE difference between the two. Not talking just about specs here. First of all, the AF system is WORLDS better than the 7D--and I think it's pretty good on the 50D already--for sports it's AWESOME. Ditto for moving wildlife (BIF shots). The AF just locks on and stays locked.

It does better in high ISO situations than a 50D. Maybe not an earth shattering difference but there is a difference. When shooting sports inside just about ANY improvement on high ISO performance is big.

The viewfinder is WAAAAAYYYYY better. It's the best viewfinder I've looked through.

Faster FPS as well. Again, for sports or moving subjects, this is very important.

There are other things, of course, but these are the two things which jumped out at me right away. Things like HD video are nice but I'd never really use it so I don't care about that. But, overall, it is a HUGE improvement over the 50D.

Personally, I'd not hesitate to make that jump. I plan to later this year actually.

Personally, I think the POTN guys gave you the best advice on this.

Just me, but I like waiting for the generation advance and tier advance count to be at least 2 before considering upgrading. I.e., upgrading a single tier, or a single generation generally isn't worth it to me. One tier and one generation, or two generations is closer. Feature-chasing is an easy way to spend a lot of money and to be discontent when the new product announcements arrive.

I don't know about all that. The 7D is a significant upgrade to a 50D in many ways. Of course, you may not need those improvements. I'd absolutely love to have the AF on the 7D but I can't swing the upgrade. That alone makes it worth it for anyone shooting fast-moving subjects.
