I currently have an XS, and I'm debating whether or not to buy a used classic 5D or a new T2i - i can get the 5D for a few hundred dollars more, but it's close. I don't really need video, and I love low-light and landscape photography, which is why i'm considering the used full frame 5D. However, it's an old camera, and I don't know anyone who uses one.
Anyone ever use the classic 5D? Is there anything i should be concerned about? I also hear the T2i is faster, but i don't know how much. I currently have three lenses: 1. Canon 50mm 1.8 2. Tamron 17-50 2.8 3. Canon 10-22 EF-S (which i'll have to sell, but can help pay for another lens) thanks josh |

My friend Louise loves her 5D Mk1 as does her husband, Andrew... (Yep, they have one each) she takes amazing photos with it (She could take amazing photos with a bottle and a piece of card paper) It is a beautiful camera. Oh, My friend Matt has one two (He's had two as he left the first one on a bus!!!) and he too takes amazing phots with a good solid 5DMk1

I own and use a 5D and 40D, and sometimes a 350D
The 5D is a great camera, providing you have a good lens to go with it.

So the main "gotcha" here is that you're probably going to need to replace your lenses. And those replacements may be non-trivial. The 10-22 equivalent on full-frame is the astronomically expensive EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM. The 17-50's closest equivalent is the equally expensive EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. Also remember that your 50mm lens is now going to give you the same FoV on the 5D that a 35mm lens would on your XS. OTOH, given that you like landscape shooting, I think the 5D is probably an ideal tool and well worth the cost difference, if you can afford to get the glass for it. My personal recommendation would be to sell the 17-50 and 10-22, and throw the money towards a EF 17-40 f/4L USM. It's one of the few sub-$1k L lenses (~$700).

Thanks for the heads up! i just realized last night that my Tamron 17-50 won't work well with the 5D. I think i might save up for a while and try to go for the 5D mk II. I'm definitely going to stick with all full-frame lenses from now on, and since I really really want a full frame, i'm not going to spend the money on a crop-sensor upgrade.
thanks for your help!! |
