Default First DSLR

People........I need your opinion on the Canon 1000D which is currently selling for $684 (AUD) . This seems like a good price for an entry level DLSR. Not worried about the lack of video mode on this unit. I could probably squeeze them down on price even more. Appreciate the input from more experienced people with DSLR camera's. Currently have a TZ7 which I am very happy with but would like to step up to the more versatile DSLR.
Robert.

It's a good entry level camera, and you'll notice a big step up in image quality from your point and shoot even when shooting auto. However, the benefit of upgrading to the SLR is going to be more control over your shots and RAW.

You might want to rethink that price though. In the US you can pick up an XS and two lens for $600 Canon EOS Rebel XS Black SLR Digital Camera with EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens & 75-300mm f/ 4-5.6 III EF Zoom Lens

Thankyou rpgfkp....I will certainly do some homework on the price and consider ordering from the states.
I also checked out your link.....that is a great price for canon with extra lens

Those two lenses are what are known as "kit" lenses: low-cost, consumer-quality. They are basically made to be cheap, but are still quite usable, and you can get great pictures with them. But they are more limited, mostly on maximum aperture, and the glass won't be as nice as with more expensive lenses.

I would also recommend considering a twin-lens kit that has the EF-S 18-55 IS paired with the EF-S 55-250 IS, rather than one with the 75-300 III. The 55-250 IS is much newer, designed for digital, and includes IS. Optically, it is stronger than the much older 75-300 design.

Thankyou Inkista.... I might just buy the camera local with the single lens and get a quality zoom lens later. I reckon I can bump the price down with a bit of talking.... or get them to throw in a quality sd card.
