Default Canon 550D doesn't support PS Elements 7 Raw

Bloody Hell My hubby has bought me a new camera and I went out yesterday and took a load of photos in raw like always and went we went to upload them on to Photoshop Elements 7 a message came up saying the files are damaged and the raw files cannot be imported. After doing some digging on the net via Adobe it seems that the new camera cannot use my version of elements.

Is there different version of raw? I thought raw was raw period.

I'm pissed off. I never had this problem with my Canon 40D.

Anyway, we've upgraded and paid more for it in £ than $ (as always).

I think Lightroom 2.6 didn't support RAW files from the 550D, but recently they put out a 2.7 update which does. So maybe there is an update for you in the pipeline?

Just use Adobe DNG Converter 5.7 to convert from RAW to DNG.

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 5.7 update

Even the latest version of Camera RAW for CS4 didnt support the 550D for a while (it only got patched about a week or so ago). When the new cameras come out, it takes a bit for Adobe to update.

Your camera isnt the issue: your software is. Brand new cameras and older software dont play nice.

Kinda hard to code for a camera that's not out yet. And once it's out, it takes a while to write for it, and get the code updated and pushed out. And whether the new ACR will work with your software is another issue. This is what's known as the "photoshop tax." You want to use the RAW files directly, you may need to upgrade to PSE8.

This is why we like the DNG converter.

And as I've been saying in numerous DNG vs. RAW threads, RAW is not a standard. It's not really even an acronym. It's the raw data dump from the sensor. It's TIFF with a bunch of metadata. And the metadata changes to accommodate all the new features everybody clamors for on their new cameras. You want the software to automagically correct for vignetting? It's gotta have data to do that. Where your thinking is in error is that "RAW is always RAW." It ain't. It changes with every camera release.

Thank you for the replies. My husband in the end sorted it out by searching varous forums on the 'net with similar problems. He did ask what my "friends" on here say so I got him to read this thread lol!

He still thinks ps Elements 8 is a pile of crud and used every single anglo saxon swear word there is to get it all sorted and spent all evening getting it fixed and it now works!

Thanks for taking the time to reply is its appreciated!

I have a question about that.
I have, a few times, shot in both RAW and L mode with my camera, to see about playing with the RAW version, but when I upload them to my computer, they appear as double jpeg images. Is this bc my PSE8 can't read my XS, or is my computer retarded?

Do you have Adobe Camera RAW installed? You need version 5.1 or later installed for PSE8 to grok the XS's RAW files.
