Computer no longer recognizing Camera - Help!

Yesterday, my Canon Rebel XSi and my laptop were working beautifully. Images were taken and downloaded, birds sang, the world was good.

Today, I cannot get EOS utility to work. And I can't even get my laptop to recognize the camera. The birds are not singing right now, the sky is black, and I'm not happy.

The camera was recognized by another computer in our home. I've uploaded new versions of the EOS utility and other programs, but it's just not picking up.

I upgraded Norton, but I can't imagine this being the cause.

Had anyone had this problem, and if so, could they give me some guidance?

Ok, I've seen this answer on lots of different sites - "get a card reader"

Why is this?

Is there a flaw in the software cannon providers?
Does the cable just break down?

What is going on that this just happens?
