Question 24-105mm Canon L Series Lens on 400d

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has bought the 24-105mm f/4 L series canon lens for a crop frame canon dslr? I know it gives an effective crop of 38mm and was wondering how people have found it, and how it fares as an everyday walk-around lens?

I'm planning on upgrading hopefully to a 5D Mark ii eventually, or whatever latest installment is around when I finally have enough funds, and I already own the 10-22mm super wide angle so the loss at the wide end of the lens can be compensated for. I have read the two lenses complement each other, and would like to hear any personal experiences any of you have had.

Also I'm touring the US over the summer so it would be my primary lens for that trip also.

Thanks for any advice,

Paul

I used one on my XT, and continue to use it on a 50D. I love it, and have no problems, but I tend to shoot longer than the average. I still don't have an ultrawide. The only people I've heard complain about the 10-22/24-105 combo are those for whom 20-30mm is their most common working focal length range, and so 22/24mm is not a natural "breakover" point. For them, a 17-40L tends to be a better buy.

The 24-105 is a great travel/walkaround lens, but it does have drawbacks: f/4 is still too slow for available light, and some folks find the sharpness is not up to their expectations from the high sticker price. Ditto the wide-end distortion and CA.

The 24-105 is actually weakest in corner performance, so using it on a crop body tends to make it look better than using it on a 5D.

Thumbs up

I used the 24-105mm lens on my canon XTi and continue to love it on my 5D Mark II. I think it is an excellent everyday walk-around camera. I took it on the XTi all through Japan for a few weeks and rarely wanted to change my lens.

What inkista posted is exactly right so I won't bother to reiterate it again.

My friend shoots one on his 7D and loves it. Extremely sharp and great contrast.

Thanks alot for the advice Inkista and Lorax, I have just been to see my uncle who has one mounted on his 5D Mark ii, and I had a play with it on my 400d and was suitably impressed, also got to have a go with a 100-400mm L he'd been lent for the weekend which was a really nice piece of glass.

Anyway I've decided to purchase one I think, so hopefully I should get that sorted tomorrow.

Thanks again, Paul
