As a Canon advocate through and through, I'd have to answer, it's not really, yes and no.
I have a 50D as a backup body; it's a great camera, with good low light performance and fast(ish) AF, but a comparison between the 50D and the D300s isn't really a fair fight. Even as a Canon user, I'd have to admit that the D300s is better than the 50D (but it is much more expensive). A fairer comparison would be between the D300s and the 7D, closer in features and price, but I'd have to put my unbiased vote in the Canon corner for that one.

Better? Well, it all depends on what you want out of the camera. I can say you can't get anything from Nikon which compares to the 50D when you figure in price and what the camera does. The D300S does more than a 50D but it costs a WHOLE lot more and I don't believe you get that much more from the D300S to warrant the difference in price.
As far as whether it's a pro body or not. Well, Canon considers it more of a semi-pro body but I'm using it for shoots and I know lots of other people do as well. I do, however, plan to get something else (i.e. upgrade) later this year and to keep the 50D as a backup body. I think you see the 50D used as a backup body for pros quite often. The 50D is a quite capable body. |

Define "nature" photos: wildlife, landscape, flower macros? For most of these, you can use any camera body you want and still get good results--it depends more heavily on your lenses.
But for serious landscape photographers, full-frame is considered more of a tool of choice. For wildlife photographers, crop bodies tend to be used more for the pseudo "reach" the crop factor gives.
