Default Advice

I'll be as brief as I can be.

I'm considering a switch from Nikon to Canon (from a D40 to a T2i).

Originally I was going to purchase a Nikon D90, but I've recently began working with a photographer as an assistant, and he wants me to start splitting the work eventually. So, since he uses Canon (5D Mrk II), and has great lenses, I'm considering the jump to Canon.

However, I already have an 18-55 and 35 MM lenses for my nikon. I've been told I can use these on the Canon with an adapter. Would anyone know any information on that? Is that even a worthwhile idea?

I'd say add 'em to the body as a package, if you're selling to fund a Canon purchase. While you could use an adapter ring and put them on a Canon body, since they're both G lenses (most of the DXs are), you won't have any way to control the aperture. When adapting a lens, you lose autofocus and aperture control from the body because the electrical contact information is completely lost--the camera can't talk to the body. The only way to control the aperture is with an aperture ring* and if the lens doesn't have one...

On the Canon side, the 18-55 IS, when kitted, only adds about $100 to the price of the body, and the 50/1.8 II is about $100. So if you can get most of your money back on the 35/1.8, you should be in ok shape. Sadly, we don't have an EF-S 35/1.8. We keep hoping. You could also get the EF 35/2, but it's more expensive.

*(or with that funky rarely-available $250 adapter ring from 16:9. I tend not to count it).

I agree, definitely sell your current lenses (there's ALWAYS a market) and go with canon equipment. The adapters are really more trouble than they are worth. You'll be happier with equipment made for your camera.

I have to disagree. It depends on the lenses, the subject matter, and on the shooter. For me, adapter rings are definitely worth it. I have an Olympus OM-mount 50mm f/1.2 lens that's as small as the EF 50/1.8 II, that cost me less than $300. I love being able to use it. Ditto my C/Y Zeiss lenses, and my Leica Rs. Alt. glass isn't for everyone, but there are reasons some of us go nuts over it.

I would agree, however, that it's not worth the pain just to keep a kit lens. Now, if we were talking about the Nikon 14-24 or a tilt-shift, that would be a different matter.

Thanks, guys.

A big selling point for me on the T2i over the D90 is microphone input, to be honest!

I mean, T2 has more megapixels, etc etc, but the D90 has a stupid mono mic.

So I mean, you're getting a great digital camera AND HD video camera.

For the SAME price as a D90. Can't beat it.
