Default Dioptric adjustment

I recently got a new cannon xs and no matter what i do I can not get the little dots to come in perfectly sharp. I thought maybe I needed glasses or something so I had my husband try and he couldn't either. So my question is are the dots suppose to be sharp or just the boxes?? Or just the imagine in the view finder? From reading the manual it seems the little dots inside the boxes should be perfectly sharp.....Help!!

The boxes and the dots will be sharp at the same time.

Your best bet is to take the lens off, aim at a white wall and try it.

Failing that, you may both need glasses for close-up objects. The Diopter may not have enough range for your eyes.

So does that mean I will not be able to focus properly? Or only manually focus properly?

Auto-focus is not influenced by this. Of course manual focus is, as you won't be able to properly focus when you can't properly focus ;-)

Sorry for delay I had to wait for a rebel with led dot to return home. When led is unlit the dot is sharp when lit it appears slightly OOF.

But as the square is etched on the focusing screen surface, it is the important area to have in focus if you are using manual focus.

The diopter adjustment has no effect on auto-focus.
