Hello Friends,
I am a newbie to DSLRs, am planning to buy Canon 1000D, should I go with the 18-55 non-IS thats bundled with the camera or should I replace it with 18-55 IS lens the price difference is of Rs. 5500 INR.

Go with the IS lens. Much improved over the non IS version.

Where the hell are you finding a new XS kitted with the non-IS 18-55?! The only Canon 1000D kits I've seen have the IS version of the lens.

The Rebel XS comes with the IS lens. The 1000D comes with the non-IS lens.

Actually, I think depending on the country, the 1000D can come with either the IS or the non-IS 18-55. Huh. Live and learn.

i am looking to buy the canon eos1000d i am in the uk and i can only seem to find bundles that come with the 18-55mm non is lens i was wondering how much difference the i.s makes ive heard it helps with taking photos in low lighting indoors. I am also looking to buy with it the 50mm 1.8f lens which ive heard is a fast lens good for low lighting indoors so i could use that for low light indoors photos instead of the 18-55mm kit lens. My other alternative is to buy the body and an 18-55mm is lens separate which would cost £70 more than buying the non is bundle what would you advise me to do thanks.

The difference IS makes is the ability to avoid camera-shake blur at slower shutter speeds (it's generally rated as extending the shutter speed by three stops, which is 23 = 8 times longer. So, if you could, say, handhold without introducing blur down to 1/60s, then with IS, you could do it down to 1/8s. It still won't replace a tripod, which could let you do minutes-long exposures.
But with either a tripod or IS this means you'll only get an unblurred picture if your subject doesn't move. So, for night-time shots of buildings or still lives indoors, it's good. But for portraiture or catching the rugrats running around the house, or shooting a band in a club or a basketball game in a gym, it's not so good. That's where the 50/1.8 comes in. I'd say go for the bundled kit with the non-IS 18-55. £70 may seem like a lot, but if you try to buy the lens separately later, it's going to cost you more. And it's still a great snapshot lens for vacation photography when you have a lot of light: 18 mm is plenty wide, and can help you with landscape shots. The 18-55 kit lens is the lowest-cost wide angle you can find for a crop body camera. The IS version is better, both in usability and optically, but if you can't find it, the non-IS 18-55 is still going to work.
