Just get the kit lens. It's only $130 difference in price between the body and the kit, and there's no other walkaround zoom lens you could buy at that price that would be an improvement. You only get the camera body only if you already own the lenses you need, or you know exactly what lenses you already want.
If you're a newbie, getting your first SLR ever, then getting the kit lens will at least start you out with a lens so that you can get enough experience to see what you want your next lens should be. The 18-55 kit lens is a good, low-cost vacation snapshot lens that goes from wide-to-normal. It's good for landscapes and people and daytime shots.

Hey, I had an SX10 IS before I upgraded to my T1i, too!
I opted to not get the kit lens at all. I have the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and I love it. It's similar focal lengths, but you get the benefit of having that fast 2.8 for the whole zoom range (important for me as I shoot almost exclusively in low-light situations). |
