What's your budget (for camera and lenses, together)?
Budget is usually the single biggest determining factor of which camera you might want to go for. Essentially, the higher-tiered the camera you want, the more features it will have and the more expensive it will be. And the newer the camera you want, the more up-to-date its technology/features will be, and the more expensive it will be. These Wikipedia tables lay out the tiers and generations of dSLR bodies by brand:For example, you talk about the D3000, D5000, and D80. The D3000 is the lowest current entry-level camera. The D5000 is the next highest level entry-level camera, and the D80 is one generation back and a mid-level camera. Chances are you're going to get the best bargain features-to-price with the D80, the lowest price with the D3000, and the newest technology/performance with the D5000. Which one you should go for depends on your budget, and what you need the camera to do. Similarly, on the Canon side, you'd get the lowest price with the XS (current lowest level), the newest technology with the T2i (current next up level), and probably the best features-to-price bargain with the 40D (one generation back, mid-level).
