I am currently using an original Digital Rebel, mainly for hockey photos inside a wide variety of poor to moderately lit arenas. and finding that even with using the 10D firmware to get this camera to 6400 ISO, the noise is too much for good quality picts. I have tried a variety of lenses but the noise is still there even with a better than average lens. I am wanting to upgrade but am on a budget. Would love the 7D but this is out of budget for the time being. Would anyone have a reccomendation of a Canon body with exceptional high ISO capabilities with low noise ratio? This can be current or older models as I am not against going with used gear.
I am a long time Canon shooter but not against looking at Nikon if they have something good to offer on a cost conscious budget. |

Look at the T2i. Although, honestly, a Nikon D5000 wouldn't be a bad choice, either, as long as you had an AF-S lens.
Don't expect miracles at iso 6400, though.

The 7D is VERY useable even at 6400. I would presume that the T2i is similar.

Another alternative to consider, if you're not wedded to Canon, is the Pentax K-x. It's getting pretty good reviews for its low-light performance, and it goes for around $550 (US) with the kit lens.

The one that costs the most..

LOL! He's kinda right.
I guess full frame cameras would give you the best high ISO performance? However, you'll pay dearly for that. Someone else can chime in. My 50D does quite well but my friend's 7D does much better (for crop bodies) The Nikon D90 does extremely well as does the D300s (for crop bodies). Nikon is said to have less noise than Canon at higher ISOs. Not that Canon is bad--I just switched to Canon and have some of the same needs. |

May I suggest the EOS 40D with fast glass you didnt really say what type of lens that you are useing. The 40D with 70-200 F2.8 shoots very well in low light situations but the lens is quite abit of money

And though I know you say it's out of your limit, consider the 8 fps the 7D offers. Although, to reiterate what others have been saying you can also buy yourself some ISO with faster glass, as well. What are you shooting with?
