Jordon, I like your technique on the above Audi, but sometimes you just have to work with what you have. My shot of this Vette was in a crowded parking lot cruise night with plenty of clutter around it. Originally it was just shot for my own pleasure, and not meant to be sold. Months later, the owners wife approached me and asked if I could get some enlargements of the image and she liked the idea of a totally blacked out background. (as a photographer and salesman of many years, I learned a long time ago that it's always best to give what the customer wants) The images would be a birthday present for her husband. As far as your 2c's, well you're certainly entitiled to your opinion. Now for my 2c's, I did go to your Flikr account...a lot of car shots for sure, but nothing particularlly creative or artistic, or especially interesting...just a bunch of car pictures.

If you so desire, check out more of my car photography at my album: http://digital-photography-school.co...-my-stuff.html

Auto-Focus,

I'm not intending to be offensive here, so bear with me.

The front left bumper has really been hacked off and doesn't help the photo. My eyes goes right there and won't leave. The all black background doesn't seem to compliment the car very much.

I'm sure the customer was happy with it. I've had customers happy with stuff I wouldn't show to anyone. But, sometimes the customer needs a little coaching as I'm sure you know as being a salesman.

I would have used the opportunity to set up a shoot with them so that you could have really gotten a proper angle/background...etc. So you could control the stuff you couldn't while taking this photo. Oh, and if it was for a present, I know of a few guys whom I've done bday and xmas presents for who "borrowed" the car one day and let me shoot it for a few hours without the owner knowing. It was all in fun and no one has been upset.

So, take it for what it's worth.

Feel free to look through my car portfolio if you find anything "particularly creative".

thanks for your comments Eric...well taken. However, not too much I could do about the left bumper...it unfortunately bordered the frame in the original shot, and I didn't want it to boarder the frame in the enlargement. And of course, the original background was a mess, so blackening it out was the best option that worked for me, and the wife. As far as re-shooting the car there would have been no way to do that without getting the owner involved, and therefore ruining the surprise. This car is "hands off" for the wife...in fact, she didn't even know he had bought the car..just came home and showed up with it one day.
By the way, I have looked at your work before, and I do like them...liked your recent one Camaro with helicopter. I'm sure you understand my comment of "particularly creative," ...anyone can take pictures of cars, but not all make them creative or artistic. Thanks again for your comments

That's because my flickr consists of majorly shots from car shows, so yeah they're just a bunch of car pictures.

Back to topic, the technique used on the Audi was in a showroom with ropes around it and people looking at it. The whole point of the black background is to remove the clutter. I think that if you faded the black down to the ground, so that the ground fades to black, and then cleaned up the ground, it would make for a better looking image.

Well, I guess if you put your work up here you're bound to get varied opinions (and you know what they say about opinions)...Bob, this remark was from a student, and judging from my own kids, they all think they know everything there is to know in the world, and they certainly feel they know more than us old timers!!

Thanks for your support

@TW0R I think you'll find people a little more receptive to constructive criticisms if you avoid such archane and potentially offensive vocabulary. It is not surprising that so many have to "get up the courage" to post in the forums. We are all here to learn and appreciate each other's strengths in an environment that is inviting and respectful. Thanks!
