Default Zombie effect

This is my first ever attempt at writing a tutorial so ill try not to miss anything out.

This was done with photoshop,

Before

After

- Take your original image, convert to black and white (or desaturate fully. DO NOT CONVERT TO GRAYSCALE as the following will not work) and duplicate the layer and make any clone stamp fixes to the skin if you need to (i removed the shadow under my 2nd chin )

- On this layer in brush size 5 (for this size image) burn the outline of the eye (around the whites of the eye) the the shades of the line of the side of the nose, also the top, middle and bottom of the lips, then the centre line of of the eyebrows, this gives a more mooded look to the face and draws you to the eye ready for the next step,

- Using the clone stamp tool carefull clone more of the iris over the pupil of the eye to give a cats eye effect (i had a close up picture of a real cats eye which id googled, to model my eye on so it looked realistic) (when doing this step and the next step, i had set my zoom so the the eye was quite large to make sure i kept within the lines of the iris)

- Create a new layer (transparent) and colour in the iris on this layer a bright yellow (using a 100% hard edged brush) now set the opacity of this layer to suit, this will give you a mustardy looking colour over the original detals of the eye

now this will give you the basis of your final image, now for the skin and background effects, i have a small textures library which is close up images of a brick, paving slab, peeling paint, wood, etc which i used for my images but you can download textures from many places on flickr that are free to use as long as they are not used commercially (this is why i have my own images so i can use them whatever i want to do with them, i having your own textures its a great plaything to give images that little ping)

- Open a texture, (in this case a dirty paving slab) as a new paintshop image, if requied change the image size of your texture so the two images match either in height or width (or both if your lucky) without destorting it, so you may match the hight if you width will be ok or you width if the height will be ok, now copy this edited texture, go back to your portrait image and paste as a new layer.

- set this layer to overlay (for those of you not sure where this option is: on the bit that shows you your layers, your selected layer will show as normal, click on "normal" and you will get a drop down list, in list list select overlay) then on the layers tab at the top of the ps window, from the menu select "layer mask", then "show all"

- select your paintbrush tool, set the brush to 100% hardness, and set the colour to black, now paint over the area that is not your skin (clothes, background, etc) and the texture will dissapear where you paint.

- now repeat the above three steps for your background, but painting you skin out instead of your background.

- Once happy flatten the image (or just go straight to "save as" a jpeg and it will save a flattened version of it for you) and make any final tweeks you think it needs such as sharpness, vibrance, saturation etc (in this image i just flattened and saved without any other adjustments)

once you have got the hang of this then you can apply texture overlays to any image, my favourite is a peeling or cracked paint overlay to an image to give it an authentic aged painted look.

if you try this please share your images, id like to know ive taught someone something new (to them) for once

I just loved this tutorial! Awesome! I am still trying to understand all of the layers, but I took a shot at it and this is what I got! Thank you so much!
