Default My Cross Daughter

Cross processed that is...

I had a bit of a play the other day cross processing a pair of sun glasses (posted in critique) and after taking a few shots of my daughter at the park today thought I might give it a go with a regular portrait type shot...

The before shot:
daniatpark-original

And after:
daniatpark

I've not done much extreme editing like this, but over all I'm happy with the effect. To get there I:

Did the usual basic levels correction and used Kens duplicate - equalize - blend trick (probably the best PS trick I've learnt from here )

Did a high pass sharpen

Then I cross processed using a curves adjustment layer. This darkened the eyes way too much so I used the layer mask and a soft brush to remove the effect to the eyes.

The cross processing also brought out too much red in her checks so I applied a selective colour adjustment layer above the curves and bumped the magenta down on the red channel until it looked O.K. I then used the layer mask and soft brush again to brush out everything except her face so the rest of the reds weren't washed out.

Then to finish it off I applied a circular gradient of transparent to pure black with the centre on her face and set the blending to soft light and bumped the opacity down to suit.

I'm really happy with it for a first attempt, I feel I haven't blasted the colours out too much?

What do you think?

What would you have done differently?

Thanks for looking

Overall this has made the photo better...only difference I think I would have made it to push the background a little futher out of focus, making the young girl stand out even more......Well done.....Paul

I think overall you achieved a nice affect, however I think that the rosiness of her cheeks is still a little too harsh, so maybe play around with that a little more, but great job!.

My Wife mentioned the checks were a bit too red still on her work screen, this was done on my laptop so the colours aren't as accurate as on my PC, I'll have a bit more of a fiddle on the PC later.
