That's not really a good example of circular polarizing filter.
Here's a better example:

If you read more carefully, you'll see that the OP wasn't talking about a circular polarizer in the first place. The post was about a workaround for P&S cameras that won't take a CPL filter. Of course. being from a P&S with a pair of sunglasses held in front, it won't compare to a DSLR with a CPL, but that wasn't the point.

You need to make sure the sunglasses you use are actually polarising ones as not all of them are. The more expensive the more likely it is but still not guaranteed. If they are not polarising than you have either an ND filter or a coloured filter. It looks like the OPs glasses had a redish tint to them.

You also need to be careful as they may confuse your autofocus.

Yes, I think your sunglasses were tinted -- the effect you see is more the tint than any polarizing.

You *could* hold a regular polarizing filter (if you have one for your new camera) in front of your P&S lens -- that would work equally well, or even better due to its relatively neutral color.

Not necessarily. Some "P&S" cameras actually do have threads, or may have adapters or tubes available -- in some cases, made by third-party companies such as Tiffen -- which attach to the camera and add mounting threads in front of the built-in lens.

Incidentally, a little bit of Googling seems to indicate that the CoolPix 800 has 28mm threads, and Nikon made a filter kit which included a CPL [along with a UV, a Neutral 4, and a Neutral 8]. Even if you can't find the genuine Nikon set, though, I would assume that you can still use anything with 28mm threads. That includes lenses as well as filters.
