Default Baby fern

Using Photoshop Elements 7, I tend to do some of the same basic edits to nearly all of my pictures (until I take a full course and learn more):
1. I usually crop first if necessary (I did in this one slightly because there was a reddish spot I didn't like).
2. I adjusted the lighting levels.
3. I adjusted the saturation by adding more green to the picture.
4. I increase the contrast a little.
5. Then, on this picture, I use the burn tool to darken the shadows and the dodge tool to lighten the highlights (or is it the other way around?).
6. I copied the layer and used the unsharp mask tool (I really can't remember but it was likely about 50%) and then on the new layer I erased everything except the little baby bud.

I used my new Canon xsi with the 18-55 lens that comes in the kit. As a new slr owner (and fairly new at Elements) I would love any & all feedback.

Nice work I love the outcome. I am trying to learn Elements myself but I haven't gotten very good at it yet.

What has helped me the most is watching tutorials online and, at the same time, trying to follow along on my computer. I have found some great sites online that have a lot of useful info (if you send me a private msg I can email you my favorites).
