Default Photo to Canvas

Art she pretty..

This was my first time trying something like this, and also the first time using a tablet and pen (an a4 medion tablet i got rather cheep). I wanted to try do something nice to share with the girl in the photo.. as i feel she deserved it

First of all i cropped and masked the image so that i only had the subject available, and then added an orange background.

Once i had done that i duplicated the subject layer and used a blur filter (surface blur) and i ajusted the settings to give me a very smooth image with just large lines of detail (ull see what i mean when you adjust the sliders if you try this yourself).

After that i took a snapshot in the history bar and then removed anything from the subject2 layer (that i had just made). I then switched to the art history brush and after ticking the box in the histroy section next to my snapshot i selected a brush from the WET section and started of with a rather large brush to just add blobs of stuff.. and working down to smaller brush's to add more detail.

A while later when i needed more detail i then moved the original subject layer up (the actual photograph) duplicated it and took another snap shot and again deleted the content in the new layer and moved the original layer to the bottom again. I then after selecting the new snapshot in the history box and a much smaller brush started to draw around the eyes and other features to give them more detail. I also added color and a catch light to the eyes later.

To finish off the rest of the background i made a new layer, filled it with a sort of brown shade and again took a snapshot and deleted the content of the layer and with a large brush i was just dabbing around (went slightly over the hair and stuff to) then later used the difference clouds filter and faded it to just show a hint of the effect and added a vignette effect to darken.

The last step was to flatten the image, use the smug tool a little to smothe out some parts and then add a canvas texture.

Im sorry if my explanation isnt so good, ive had very little sleep over the last few days hehe and im not used to doing this sort of thing. Anyway I hope you enjoy and i hope that this can help someone do something similar (if you can follow it hehe).

its not as much work as you might think, but then i guess it just depends on how much detail and things you want to add .

i learnt from a magazine called photoshop creative, they have a tutorial about it in there latest mag, but i didn't really follow it.. (as soon as i realised how the art history brush worked and what it could do i just went my own way with it.) the magazine did give me the inspiration to try and change the original photo into what i have there so it was £5 well spent .

I still haven't really read the magazine to be honest.. i think i should spend some time with it hehe.
