Default Love Those Baby Blues - 1st Attempt at Selective Coloring

I generally take shots, do some minor tuning in Picasa and leave it at that (not that my shot don't need work, its just that I have not the skill to make dramatic editing changes through Gimp or PS). Here is my first attempt at selective coloring. I used The Gimp and was able to apply one of the DPS Photoshop tutorials to Gimp. The edited photo is better viewed as a larger size on Flickr. Excuse the spit up but it was feeding time and grandpa (that would be me) forgot to bring a change of clothes for the baby.

I know what you mean, I am still figuring out Gimp myself.

You have done great here though!

Learning selective coloring is a great step to mastering post work. It was one of the first editing processes I tried and my first attempt at masking. Hope you have fun learning more editing processes - great start!

I would suggest upping the contrast and lowering the brightness some for the black and white part. The baby blues (pun intended) are a little TOO bright and look distracting because the b&w section is so light.

Edit: here's my rendition of the original image. I used selective coloring on the eyes. I upped the contrast, lowered the brightness, adjusted the curves a bit, added a sepia photo filter and then cropped it a bit. It was a bit hard to work with though seeing as the picture is cut off right below the chin. I suggest taking it holding the camera more like a portrait since it's up close and you get more of the baby's body/father rather than chair and such.
