Default Lion's Eyes...

Here's my first "Before and After" post -- actually, it's my first post here period.

Meet Leo -- he's the three year old son of a family with whom my family went to the Philadelphia Zoo with on October 11th, 2008. While we were waiting in the concession line for food (40 minutes), he was playing peek-a-boo with me while his dad was holding him.

The subject is clearly his eyes -- and I happened to watch a videocast of Photoshop TV and there was a guy who did a tutorial on bringing out eyes.

Essentially, he added a new Curves layer and inverted it from white to black and took the pencil tool and opened it up until it was about the size of the pupil and clicked to blacken it. He added a second Curves layer and inverted it, this time using the brush tool at 50% opacity. He spot clicked on the light reflection in the eyes to bring them out, then opened up the diameter a bit and brushed around the iris.

When he was done, he brought the opacity of the pupil layer down to look natural. I duplicate this method and came up with this:

Comments welcome and appreciated.

Photo information:
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S5000
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/300)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 19.2 mm
ISO Speed: 200
No Flash.

Nice photo of the little boy, and great work on the eyes. I love this effect. I've seen it done several times before. I can get close, but can't seem to get it just right. Do you know if there's somewhere online where I could watch the tutorial?

Nicely done! Can you post your workflow so we might attempt the process? Because it looks a bit complicated...

If you search photoshop in itunes and look at the podcasts you will find a bunch of them. Some are aimed at photographers but most are aimed at the average person. THey are a greate resource for doing specific tasks in photoshop.
