Default Branching out when you are stumped

Saw this old boat recently and went back to photograph it. It was right up against the old cannery building and I was not able to get the angle on the shot I wanted. The result, a picture I had in mind but just could not quite capture. Tried numerous trick in PP with contrast etc but was just not happy. So I went over the top. Could not even begin to write down my steps as there were so many. Basically applied the orton effect but sharpened the screen layer and masked sections of the blur layer before merging. Then masked out parts of the orton effect to show certain aspects of the original image. Sharpened again and then overboard with levels, contrast and color saturation. Finally added the border. Phew ... what do you guys think?

Finished result.. You need to view the large image to get the full effect!

If anyone is interested in the RAW file to play around and see if you can make something better of it (NEF format, I have a Nikon D80) please PM me and I will email it to you

Thanks, I had fun playing around with it. Just could not get the POP I wanted. HDRI may work but I will leave that for the experts for now.

I loved the second one on what you did. But to be honest, the original looks also better. It feels it has some story to tell.
