Thanks for the comments everyone!
Yeah, I'm still learning so much about my camera so I had it on auto with no flash. I knew enough that if I wanted something to show of the background, I'd better not use flash. All my cousins kept asking me why P&S shots were all black in the background and mine had scenery. There was a picture that I took which I REALLY like but it's blurry cause of the long exposure times/boat movement. All in all, I was really happy with the pictures I got though and my great uncle (who was a photographer before he retired) told me I had a pretty good eye so that made me REAL happy and gave me some self confidence.

Kungpao,
I'm a little late responding, but I just wanted to say I am very impressed with you edit. Especially with the skin tones! Great job!

its funny about the cranes in chicago - when I lived there, people would say there are two seasons, Construction and Winter...
![]() I really like your edit. Did you take the photo in RAW, and I wish I could use my camera in Auto w/o flash...Or at least I do not think I can ![]() P.S. And I like how the flag is even brighter...

haha, true about the construction/winter scenario it seems. My folks live there and i generally visit around Christmas time. Although, there seems to ALWAYS be construction there!
No, I didn't take the photo in RAW. Nowadays, my D40 is set to RAW+basic but I was (and pretty much still am) in the infancy of my DSLR/Photo Processing learning curve. I get the feeling that this hobby is going to be a learning for a lifetime experience I never understood the RAW thing until visiting these forums and being curious as to it's advantages. AND I've discovered that I can open standard JPEG files in the RAW editor through photoshop and I've managed to recover several pictures I took with my P&S! It's really too much fun!
