I'm still trying to get the parts of PP that I just learned down pat. What do you think of this?

original:

New:

IMG_4331 (photoshopped)

What I did:
Sharpened image
Slight burning to face
Contrast adjustment
Colour correction
Slight levels adjustment

I think the colours are a bit flat on the original, and the PP work makes the image "pop". Am I correct?

Good job! You were right, the original was flat and you did give it a pop.

I like the extra pop you've added, but be very careful when PPing how your adjustments affect the skintone. If you look at his face here, it's gone a very saturated red.

I like the PP version a lot better. Kathryn is right, his face is a little too saturated, but still it look better than in the original.

I'm finding the people like and expect really saturated colors overall - looks more "lifelike". You might want to desaturate the face some - it does look too red. Otherwise, a nice improvement!

Great job! PP can be a bit bewildering as there's such a lot to learn asn so many ways of acieving the results you want. I've only recently discovered how powerful a tool curves are. Once you've got the things you're currently using down I'd recommed giving that a try.
Here's a link to a useful resource which gives you bite sized help on pp.

it really is a much better photo - and the redness to me is ok...you can say he forgot his sunscreen...
