Before:

Desaturated in photoshop. Cropped. Created a levels layer and moved the gray slider to the right, the white slider to the left a little. Used smart sharpen to get more detail.

I like it. Looks more dignified without the orange properller bird.

the orange properller bird it's so cute......

the final output it's very good...you have brought up the details and the focus on the statue leaving apart the surrounding distractions....

Is that St Francis of Assissi? The toy birds would have been ironically appropriate but I think you made a good choice on the overall crop and have brought out the detail very well in the black and white conversion process.

Did you just use simple desaturation for that before tweaking levels and sharpness?
