Default Just plain cute! (before/after)

I posted the 'after' shot in the "Share your Shots" forum and was asked to show before/after pics of it here and explain what I did. This is for you patjesten!

Well, this handsome little guy is my precious 2yo nephew! Ain't he just "plain cute'?? As you can see in the before shot, the subject is slightly blurry and the exposure is not right. Thanks to post processing in Photoshop (CS2), I was able to fix it a bit.

I first sharpened it using unsharp mask and then added a lens blur (lens blur tutorial). I then copied the layer 3 times, with each layer using a different blending mode (ie: overlay, multiply) and changing the opacity level. I used the lasso tool around the subject and created a new layer via copy. Lastly, I added a grunge texture layer and added a vignette using the distort/lens correction filter.

There was a lot of playing around with all the different layers, so I can't give exact steps. The following tutorial from DSP also helped me with this effect: "Enhancing Washed Out Photos"

Whew! I personally love how this turned out. It's one of my favorite PP work I've done thus far.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so encouraged by this forum, thanks to supportive members like you all.

I actually did not know how this was going to turn out before I started to work on it, but to my surprise, it turned out quite wonderfully! I am so excited! LOL.

if you'll help me get started (GIMP)...How do I accomplish this 2nd step-from the tutorial 2. Duplicate your photo and set the top layer to the blend mode of Overlay at 100% opacity.

Mr. Intensity -- in GIMP, go to your Layers dialogue box and duplicate a layer (drag the image layer down towards the icon that looks like 2 squares). Then in the Mode drop down box, choose Overlay. It should automatically be at 100% (you'll see below Mode where it says Opacity). If not, move the slider to the right until you reach 100.0

Duplicate another layer of the same image. Instead of using the Overlay mode, choose Multiply. Keep opacity at 100.0 as well.

That should help you get started with it! Then you'll need to play around with the various layers to suit your taste.

HTH!
