Default Little Comorant

Before:
Little Cormorant (Phalacrocorax niger)

After:
Little Cormorant

Nikon Coolpix L120, f/5.8, 1/400 sec., ISO not known.
Photo is clicked with max optical zoom (21X) without tripod.

I edited it with Picasa 3. Just cropped its size and used auto contrast first and then adjusted shade.

What else can I do more to improve.

Well I am no expert. Just a hobbyist. I attended a photography class today and one of the things they mentioned was when you take a picture of a bird-like this, by itself try to anchor it on the opposite end it is facing. So placing the bird in the bottom left (if you imagine a tic tac toe board) where the two bottom lines would intersect. (Or placing the cross point of the bird and the stick there. When I tried to crop though I could not get it any further left-but it is still slightly off center. (I also added some highlights and shadows in Picasa.)

My take is that if I was just going to have the bird in the picture I would do something else to add interest to the picture. (I just added vingette here in Picknic.)

birdonstick-1

But I cropped your image differently here-and I actually like the boat in the background. (Because it is out of focus it adds interest to the picture) I like the colors in the boat too- But it does take away from the bird. Again just my preference I guess. Everyone has their own take on things.

Thank you Michelleltn. I noticed the difference in editing. I will surely try that next time. I am not even a beginner. So I know nothing about the photography. I just keep on experimenting on my new Nikon Coolpex L120. Did u see other photos on my Flickr?

Nice editing work. I agree with Michelleltn about the rule of thirds. That means placing the subject somewhere besides the very middle of the picture. Put him a little more off center, and I think you're set.

Yeah I saw them, I love the sunset picture. Did you brush over the sunset? Looks like you are doing really well getting out in nature and trying to capture things!

Here is a good article on the rule of thirds, diagonal lines, etc. The lizard picture you took is good-since he is the focus and if you look his head is placed close to one of those imaginary intersecting lines.

There are also times to just scrap the rules too.

Yes, I did some processing on that pic. but I forgot what I did as I did it without knowing anything. But now I keep a note in my mind about exactly what I do. Thanks for encouragement. And thanks to DPS. I am learning a lot. Here is a link to my photos on FB. Just have a look when you get time.

First 20 photos are taken with Canon 530A and others with Nikon Coolpix L120.
