Default Broadway - as suggested

I posted this in the Landscape / Cityscape - Critique section a while ago:

One of the responses I got was this ...

My suggestion for such a shot would be to decrease the shutter speed slightly to around 1/10 and to shoot while the traffic is moving. This would provide an interesting sensation of movement in the foreground while the background remained still.
Since I wasn't going back to reshoot the photo, I took it into Photoshop, and this was the result:

I obtained this by duplicating my background image and then adding motion blur. Then, using a mask, allowed everything - except the vehicles - from the (untouched) background layer to show through.

Your thoughts?

I like what you did here.

In comparing the two shots, there was a loss of sharpness and fullness of color from the original to the re-do. The BG now seems a bit flat.

I think you did a convincing job with the effect. It doesn't make the image "better" really, but does change what the image conveys.

Agreed. It was more about seeing how it would look if I did it in Photoshop.

Neat shot. I'd say my only issue with the "after" shot is no phantom tail lights etc. Otherwise, brings back many fond memories.

I like the original image best. There is so much going on in the pic that you don't really need blur. Unless, of course, you want a chaotic looking scene.

While I do like both images, I have to agree with you - I like the first one better. :-)

Both are good. It depends on the mood you are going for. The first one feels like a traffic grid lock. The second one feels like hustle and bustle. Like I said, both great!

In the second shot, the cop car - top, left - should probably be blurred also. Otherwise, both shots are ok. I like the first one better.
