I did this with gimp on a linux system
first i airbrushed out back ground and then ran it through a heavy filter

I reckon the original is way better than your processed shot,the first one has a bit of life to it,the second is to grainy and bland and no composition.

I do agree with you . what i was trying for was a painted look. I am always tying to do better

Default I think they both look fine

For me, it would depend on what you're using the photo for. I think the first one is nice because of the background and, depending on the look you're going for, the second one is nice because of the lack of background -- if you know what I mean.
