Default Post Production Question

Hello everyone,

I recently took this picture, (or rather someone took this with my camera) and I would like to know how to duplicate the effect, whether in image capturing or post-production. Help?

Best regards,
C.H.

If you are talking about the geometric feature on your left shoulder, I would say it is lens glare caused either by the angle of the shot or lens filter. The sun appears to be behind and to your left with the photographer shooting up at you making the light reflect/refract (I can never get those terms right) off the lens.

The more learned here can give you more/better input than I.

Welcome to DPS. What effect are you talking about? Why did you post it in the before & after category?

You can duplicate it by shooting into a light source.

Welcome to DPS.

As per what Rentham said - shoot into the light source. I'll elaborate a little on that, the light source does not have to be in the frame, however probably has to be JUST out of frame if you're not leaving it in frame.

The effect is that you get a lens flare as Hill Country Hack explained, and also you get a loss of saturation and contrast which can be a desired outcome. Some lenses handle flare spots better than others.

Think that's all there is to it...someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Yep, dead right....

I would just add that you should take several at slightly different angles to get the best effect... some will be too desaturated or overexposed....

You can also add some nice lens flare in photoshop (Filters / render / lens flare) which can give a really nice effect without the loos of saturation if that is what you prefer...

Cheers,

Glyn

One small add-in too with all the excellent advise currently given on this topic; place a cheap $5.00 UV/haze filter on the front of your camera. Because it's 'cheap' it will do a rather poor job of lens clarity providing a bit of coloring (if you will) and you'll see this more often than you'd like as you are pointing near a bright light source near or behind the object. The light is basically reflecting off of the primary lens and your 'filter' causing this. If you look at several cheap UV lens' for sale online, you'll see pics where people post that poor lens filters cause this coloring effect.

More simply though as stated in a previous text, P.S. and most applications today nearly almost always provide some sort of lens effect criteria. Cheers!!
