Default Landscape - before and after

New to DPS and dSLRs! I worked with film a lot in school so I know a lot of the basics of photography, but am relatively new to dSLRs. Just recently I received a Canon T3i and have been loving it. Here is a before and after, second one using the HDR tool in Photoshop CS5. Please leave advice/constructive criticism!! It would be greatly appreciated

Shutter .4
Aperture f/18
ISO 200
Focal length 55mm (Don't own a telephoto, unfortunately)

And the HDR

First photo had a shutter speed of .4 - over/underexposures had shutters of .6 and 1/6, respectively.
Also, these were shot JPG, not RAW. I only learned the benefits of shooting RAW after the shoot...
