Thanks for asking. So I went back into picnik and tried to reconstruct my steps. This time I used a slighty different final feature, but below are the key steps to this one and the one I showed initially:

games with picnik

1) sharpen to maximum
2) crop to square
3) turn into black + white
4) use feature: holga-ish. this is the first key step. it adds the round frame.
5) then go to "heat map". for the one i showed initially I used "infrared", for this one here I used "thermal". and then I adjusted the intensity until I liked it. in any event: this feature adds the color.
6) i may have played with some other features to add a final touch, but step 4 + 5 are the key components.

7) to get the before and after image like above go into the feature "frames".
also, I just noticed in the above final I forgot the round edges. you can these as well in the "frame" feature.

Happy painting in picnik! and please show me YOUR results here, will you?

Ok, you asked for it! Here is mine:
I put it in an attachment so I wouldn't have to put it on my Flickr page.

I have a question, though. How did you get that rainbow-like frame around the first picture?

Thanks for sharing your photo TNH, I enjoyed very much seeing it. Nice play area the kids have there!

The rainbow comes after you apply the heatmap feature over the holga-ish feature. In my photo you just see it so prominently because there was nothing but a white background. Try it with a white or perhaps just monocolored, calm background and I think you should get the same effect.

Thanks, I'll try that. Thanks for sharing how to do this, it's really neat!

Yeah - that's it. Bravo! I am so tickled you tried all the steps - and we both seem to have the same fun with playing around with colors. Feels a bit to me like being a child again with a new coloring book and box.

Here another crazy conversion from the same period. My daughter looks like a being from another planet....like in this movie Avatar I never saw....only that she is green

Playing with my Picnik Toy 2

And here the original (but also worked on in picnik)
down by the river 6 - reprocessed
